| A pre-purchase survey is a thorough inspection of the vessel's hull and deck structures, including an inspection of the wiring, fuel systems, electronics, machinery and associated systems. The inspection is typically performed ashore and afloat to check the hull for prior damage, osmotic blisters, through hull fittings, running and steering gear etc. Percussion sounding and moisture readings are performed on hull and deck structures to check for voids, soft spots, areas of delamination etc. After the vessel has been launched, a sea trial is performed, ensuring the proper operation of the engines, generators, air condition systems, electronics, etc. Depending upon the scope of the inspection, engine compression checks and oil analysis can be performed. On larger craft a marine surveyor will often work in conjunction with a factory trained diesel repair technician who is performing an engine survey. Recommendations are based upon standards and guidelines set forth by ABYC, (American Boat and Yacht Council), US Coast Guard, NFPA, (National Fire Protection Association) and SAMSŪ, (Society of Accredited Marine SurveyorsŪ). |
