| In a pre-purchase survey what exactly do you look for?
A pre-purchase survey is a thorough inspection of the vessel's hull and deck structures, including an inspection of the wiring, fuel systems, electronics, machinery and associated systems. A pre-purchase inspection is typically performed ashore and afloat to check the hull for prior damage, osmotic blisters, through hull fittings, running and steering gear etc. Percussion sounding and moisture readings are performed on hull and deck structures to check for voids, soft spots, areas of delamination etc. After the vessel has been launched, a sea trial is performed, ensuring the proper operation of the engines, generators, air condition systems, electronics, etc. Depending upon the scope of the inspection, engine compression checks and oil analysis can be performed. On larger craft a marine surveyor will often work in conjunction with a factory trained diesel repair technician who is performing an engine survey. Recommendations are based upon standards and guidelines set forth by ABYC, American Boat and Yacht Council, US Coast Guard, NFPA National Fire Protection Association and SAMS, Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors.
What do you feel about changing a boats name?
This is one of the most common questions I get. What I was brought up to believe is that if you are changing the name of a vessel that was named after a woman, to another woman's name, this is bad luck, as there could potentially be a woman scorned. If however the boat had a name like Da Da's Desire, have at it.
How long will this take?
That all depends. A 30' Catalina can be gone through thoroughly in half a day. A 55' Sportsfisherman or larger vessel can take a day and a half depending upon all parties schedules.
How much does this cost?
Many surveyors charge per foot, however some charge by the hour. Charging by the foot is customary in the area that I work in. $17.00 per foot plus mileage is typical for pre-purchase work. Compression tests, oil analysis, extended sea trials are additional.
