Preparing for The Survey
Proper preparation before the survey will insure that maximum benefit is obtained, and that nothing happens which will jeopardize the vessel or the interested parties. It will help make the process go smoothly and will save time for all concerned. When a date and agreement for a survey are established, the surveyor will provide the purchaser with a check list of items to be prepared before the survey. Some of the items to consider are:
- A responsible person should be present during the survey. This may include any of the following: the purchaser of the survey, the owner, a boatyard representative, the broker.
- The purchaser of the survey is responsible to make sure that proper permissions have been obtained from the owner of the vessel and the facility where the vessel is located. If the vessel is locked, keys should be available.
- If the vessel is out of the water, a ladder is needed. Electric lights may be needed if the vessel is under cover.
- Complete documentation should be available, regarding ownership, federal documentation, licenses, etc. Any significant maintenance records or reports of repairs will be important.
- Compartments should be reasonably free of equipment, so that the surveyor has access to every part of the vessel. If access is not available, the surveyor will not move equipment, and will so note.
- If there are areas that require tools to access (i.e. removal of panels, etc.), this must be done and replaced by a qualified mechanic; the surveyor will not do this.
- If a haul-out is required, arrangements must be made for this beforehand.
- If a sea trial is required, a competent person must be available to operate the boat.
