Pre-Purchase Survey Parameters

Marine Surveys by Peter McGuire SAMSŪ AMSŪ
  • The survey includes reasonable visible inspection of all vessel parts, systems and equipment, where accessible, and comments upon the apparent condition and safety of these parts, systems and equipment at the time of survey only. It is not a warranty or guarantee for the performance or future condition of the vessel.

  • Surveying practices such as moisture meter testing and mallet soundings of fiberglass laminates are employed during the course of the survey. If required, "Audio Gauging" of steel or aluminum hulls can be arranged at additional cost.

  • No joiner work or fasteners are removed or any "destructive" testing performed without the written consent of the owner.

  • Due to safety considerations, masts and rigging are not inspected aloft (stepped masts are inspected from deck level as far as is visible with the naked eye). If requested testing procedures such as "X ray" or "Dye penetration" can be arranged at additional cost.

  • Latent defects may be present that are not discoverable using normal surveying practices and no warranty is offered with respect to same.

  • The mandatory standards of the Transport Canada Construction Standards for Small Vessels (TP 1332E) and the voluntary standards and recommended practices developed by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC Ū) are used as technical guidelines in the conduct of the survey. Complete compliance with these standards could only be guaranteed by major disassembly / destructive testing and detailed analysis by several experts which is outside the normal scope of marine surveying practice.

  • Cosmetic appearance is noted in general terms. Detailed cosmetic deterioration normally commensurate with the age and use of the vessel is not addressed.

  • A sail survey is not included. For a detailed opinion on the condition of sails, these should be spread out on a sail loft floor for examination by a qualified sail maker.

  • Although a visual examination is performed and fluids and lubricants are visually inspected an engine survey is not included. For an opinion on the mechanical condition of engines and transmissions etc. (including generators and stern / sail drives) a qualified marine mechanic should be consulted.

  • Electrical and electronic equipment is checked by "Power up" only under the direct supervision of the owner and only where AC / DC power is available.

  • Such items as winches, line clutches or windlasses etc. are not tested under load.

  • If required a sea trial can be provided at additional cost. Due to insurance considerations the surveyor's role during the sea trial is to observe and record only and not to control or navigate the vessel or operate equipment.

  • The written survey report contains a Recommendations summary section. Recommendations are set out in a priority basis as to relative importance.

  • The survey report includes a statement of value of the vessel obtained from published industry data, valuation guides and other relevant marine sources.

  • The survey report is provided for the exclusive benefit of the client named on the title sheet and is not transferable
