He was apprenticed to a skilled professional shipwright. During his stint in the US Army he served in the Army's Navy, the Transportation Corps, where he led a service and evacuation platoon in a medium boat transportation battalion. Returning to civilian life, Hans served a two-year apprenticeship with a well known marine surveyor and became fully qualified in 1969. He also spent some time cruising offshore with his wife in the early 70's. Aside from surveying, Hans also ran delivery voyages and repossessed stolen vessel, throughout the states, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Hans set up his own business in the Marina del Rey area of California in the mid 70's and in 1986 moved his company to Santa Barbara County, California, to service California's Central Coast. In 1989 Hans began performing recurrent surveys on small passenger vessels at the request of two large insurance carriers. That business spread into coastwise and inland tugs and barges as well as commercial fishing vessels and mega yachts. An important part of his business is damage surveys and salvage supervision.
