Marine Surveys

All surveys are performed to ABYC and NFPA standards and USCG Code of Federal Regulations.   Reports are prepared using Force 5 computer software.  They are easy to read and understand, and are normally Priority Mailed within 48 hours of completion of the survey.

Types of Surveys

Pre-Purchase;  This is the most thorough and comprehensive inspection and is a must when you're buying a boat, new or used.  If the broker or seller tells you the boat doesn't need a survey, be suspicious, they all know you can't finance or insure it without one.

This survey covers condition and valuation as well as overall operation of the vessel and its systems. The vessel is examined in and out of the water for structural integrity. The electrical systems, propulsion systems and electronics are inspected and an assessment about general maintenance and cosmetic appearance is made. A limited sea trial is included.

Insurance;  This type of survey is usually requested periodically by your insurance company to allow them to determine if the vessel is an acceptable insurance risk.  They also want to know the vessel's current fair market value as well as replacement cost.

This survey, although performed to the same standards, concentrates on the risk to the insurance company and is not a pre-purchase survey.  You should never accept a seller's insurance survey as your pre-purchase survey.

Appraisal Inspection;  This is normally performed to gather enough information to determine a fair market value usually used to settle an estate, vessel donation, divorce or legal case.  Not a true and complete survey.

Damage;  Performed after an accident or damage to the vessel from mother nature.  You should always hire your own surveyor who is working for you.  You can be sure the insurance company's surveyor is working for them.

This survey will normally determine the extent of the damages and usually helps in acquiring estimates for repair.  You should have the surveyor continue to work for you after the initial inspection to be sure all repairs are carried out properly.

I perform all of the above surveys as well as consulting on refits, new and used boat purchases, and acting as a project manager for refits.  Click here for a Survey Order Form (PDF).
